Good afternoon!

My name is Andrei. I have been reading (well, watching) IDT for awhile and reading IRT for a few months and have decided to sign up.

I'm Romanian, but I study abroad. I'm currently finishing my Bachelor's in Pure Math (and hoping to go on to grad school).

Politically, I guess you could say I'm a bit more conservative than most on the forum (my 'home party' in Romania is a center-right christian democratic one).

However, I've found out that (in the 'New World' at least) I'm more comfortable around progressists than conservatives.

From time to time, you will have to excuse my english. I'm pretty good with it, but it's my third language, so...

So... hi!

From what you're saying I presume you're currently in America?

It's probably simply that Romania has a more left-leaning political spectrum than America's (though, that isn't exactly difficult...), so while you're right-leaning in Romania you're left-leaning in America without changing your political opinions.

And pure math, you say? You wouldn't happen to have an opinion on what voting methodology is the most mathematically sound for the purposes of picking a national leader, would you? Smiley

(To be honest I think I've started leaning towards having more of an interest in economic based statistics recently, mainly thanks to a rather unhealthy obsession with the British version of Deal or No Deal, even to the point of teaching myself a little Utility Theory... Well teach myself/pick up things from conversations with the lovely people over at www.bothersbar.co.uk about the show... Though even before that I was more interested in both Mechanics and Statistics than Pure. Which is odd, because it's kinda the reverse to my interests towards Physics, where the more likely I was to have use of something in real life the less interested in the thing I was)

Oh. Oops. Sorry. Forgot to say 'hi'. I look forward to reading your opinions.

And the general comments and queries apply, just as a little kinda interest things, favourite movies, books, tv shows, games etc, what hobbies you have, and all of that. The sort of stuff that's less relevent to to the forum but of interest.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

And since I was asked a question,

I'm stumped...

:retreats to safety:

My preference would go towards abstract algebra, and I haven't had a statistics course in years (hey, pure math), so...

I could probably hallucinate a system, but making it mathematically sound...

Oh, one more

books : anything by Poe, Kafka or Maupassant. In general, anything slightly dark and creepy. On the home front, I enjoy Eliade, Creanga and especially Caragiale.

movies : hard to say. I like movies in general, but I'm not nuts about it.

tv shows : Simpsons and Simpsons spin-offs

hobbies : hiking, swimming and writing short stories.

I think it's nice too. My favorite course (yet) has been ring and module theory.

Depending on how deep you go, Group Theory can be very hard or very easy. I thought it was easy, but then again we didn't go all that deep. The most modern result we studied was the Jordan-Holder theorem. I find Field Theory harder.

As for cryptography, I did some in Ring Theory (but only basic stuff), and am going to do more of it in the Number Theory course I'm taking this semester.

I figured I may as well announce it, and it seemed stupid to make a new topic for this...

I'm going back home for summer, and I don't have regular internet access in Romania (it'll do me a lot of good to be away from the devil box a little). So there won't be anyone to look for weird crap or post proto-fascist apologetics!

I'll be back in late August. In the meantime, have a nice summer.

Welcome to the forum!

Note: editted to acknowledge that I wasn't paying attention

I shouldn't post in Voter Registration right after getting home from work, my brain isn't working right.

I figured I may as well announce my coming back as well.

I have spent a very pleasent (though unpleasently hot) summer, but summer must end sooner or later...

So, the weirdness search machine is active again.

I'm leaving earlier than last year since my thesis advisor has already left for Czechia.

I have a laptop now, so I may visit during the summer, but basically:
